Epictetus – There is only one way to happiness

There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power or our will – Epictetus

This quote is attributed to the Stoic philosopher Epictetus and it encapsulates the essence of Stoic philosophy. The Stoics believed that happiness and inner peace can only be achieved by focusing on the things that are within our control, and accepting with equanimity the things that are beyond our control.

According to the Stoics, there are two categories of things in life: those that are within our control and those that are beyond our control. The things that are within our control include our thoughts, actions, and attitudes. These are the things that we can change and influence through our own efforts. The things that are beyond our control include external events, other people’s opinions and actions, and the natural course of life. These are the things that we cannot change or influence, no matter how much we may wish to.

The Stoics taught that true happiness and inner peace can only be achieved by focusing on the things that are within our control, and accepting with equanimity the things that are beyond our control. This means that we should not waste our time and energy worrying about things that we cannot change. Instead, we should focus our efforts on the things that we can change and influence, and accept with grace and humility the things that we cannot.

By focusing on the things that are within our control, the Stoics believed that we can cultivate a sense of inner peace and tranquility. We can become more self-aware, more mindful, and more in control of our thoughts and emotions. We can learn to respond to external events with equanimity and detachment, rather than with fear, anger, or despair.

At the same time, by accepting with equanimity the things that are beyond our control, we can become more humble, more accepting, and more compassionate towards others. We can learn to empathize with the suffering of others, and to respond with kindness and understanding rather than judgment or criticism.
